USGS Public Webinar - Changes coming to USGS Water Data APIs Summer 2025

Detailed Description

For over 15 years, the USGS has provided machine-readable and automated access to water data via the WaterServices family of APIs. These APIs underpin all other USGS web delivery products – including products such as the National Water Dashboard and Water Data for the Nation – and have been incredibly effective at delivering water data to the public.

This recorded webinar details the release of new modernized API endpoints for Water Data for the Nation - what you can expect from these new endpoints, when you’ll need to migrate over, and some of the most-requested new features these modernized services will provide. We’ll also discuss updates coming to dataRetrieval, the R and Python packages designed to help you access USGS water data from these services.

The APIs are hosted at https://api.waterdata.usgs.gov and provide the same data that you’ve always accessed, but with a new API interface and response format.

You can also learn more about how you will be affected by changes by visiting the water data blog at: https://waterdata.usgs.gov/blog/api-whats-new-wdfn-apis/
